When we first heard it, we could not believe our ears!
Spotify has now launched in Nigeria!!
For so long, as a Nigerian resident, Spotify had been part of a number of online services you wished you could access but you couldn’t.
So you had to either use workarounds like a VPN to hide the country you are actually visiting from, or use other audio streaming services like Audiomack, Radiotunes or Boomplay.
But no longer! During a livestream on youtube, Spotify announced their expansion into several markets including 41 new African countries, Nigeria inclusive.
This is great news not just for Spotify but for the millions of users in Africa who had to jump through ‘digital loops’ to use the service.
For many users in Nigeria, Spotify’s free plan is sufficient, as it was when they accessed the service via VPN. For better features though, Spotify has introduced a standard premium monthly subscription for ₦900 (roughly $2.19), a monthly family plan for ₦1400 (roughly $3.40), and a student plan for ₦450 (roughly $1.09).
The prices have clearly been adjusted downwards to fit the realities of the African market.
Those competetive prices will certainly help the company too. For although Spotify is a music-streaming giant, they have their work cut out to compete with the likes of Audiomack and Boomplay. Audiomack earlier expanded to Nigeria in July 2020 and Boomplay has a local presence that will be tough to beat.
Whatever the case, the tough competition Spotify brings is music to our ears (pun intended) 🙂 .
